Policy on speculative design and research

As an independent creative producer, I do not engage in speculative design and research, which involves the provision of work (design, and/or research-based consulting) for free, for a client to consider pursuing a potential project contract before the brief is presented, and/or content is provided, or as a proof-of-concept, to demonstrate skills (see web portfolio), or as part of a contest. At times, I may engage in pro-bono work; this differs from speculative work in that the outcome of the work is the same as a contractual project outcome. On the Association of Registered Graphic Designers policy on Spec Work, they state:“…spec work is universally condemned by responsible designers and design organizations around the world as being an unethical business practice–see” At the present time, I am not offering pro-bono work.
